Big Phat Beard Butter Review

The Butter Reviews

Oooops I did it again. I went and slathered a load of butter in my beard and now I have to let you know what I thought of it. Keep reading for my Big Phat Beard Butter Review.

Who are Big Phat Beard?

Stop it! No, seriously, if you don’t know then you haven’t lived!!

To read more about John and his brand you can check my other reviews of Big Phat Beard. Or, you can pop on to his website www.bigphatbeard.com to read up more. One thing I can tell you is that this man doesn’t stop!

John is always looking to improve and move his brand forward. Not one to rest on his laurels, John has passed his barbering course and is well on his way to having one of the most respected brands in the small batch beard industry.

Let’s get down to business with the Big Phat Beard Butter Review.

The Review

Before I start with all the technical stuff, let me explain something. I will not be scoring the butters, at least not yet. I want to delve into them, give my opinion and then move on to the next one. There will be different sections to the oil reviews but the main points will be the same.

Once I’ve tried and reviewed all the butters that I have I will then rate them as per usual. Then and only then, can I declare which butter is the best on the market.

Scent

This butter is called Lunar Solace and that is because BPB are marketing this as a night time butter. With the calming scent of Lavender (Granny alert? Not quite!) as well as Ylang-Ylang and Bergamot it does have a sleepy time feel to it. But, how does the Lavender perform? Will it overwhelm everything else and remind me of the old days? Days when my parents used to dump me round my Grans house so they could go on the piss!!

The quick answer is no with a slight touch of yes. Confused? Let me explain.

You do get hit with a Lavender scent when you first slide your finger in to the butter. It isn’t ridiculously overpowering, thankfully. You can also really get the Bergamot and Ylang-Ylang notes coming through almost instantly. These floral based essential oils mix together to create something a bit more exotic.

At the same time, though, I still reminisce of the times I spent round my Grans. The Lavender is just something I can’t get past and it has become something of a distraction.

To be fair to BPB the scent isn’t as bad as I thought it would be and I can understand why a lot of people like it. It is pretty mellow and I can imagine it could help soothe you and send you off to sleep with a kiss from Granny!

Durability

It doesn’t last very long in the beard which is a good thing for a night time butter. The scent is fairly mild to begin with and doesn’t destroy your sinuses like an angry wife waxing your nostril hairs. It does give you enough time to inhale the scent and get to know it but then drifts away slowly into the ocean of facial hair.

I was getting about 3 hours of scent overall with only the first hour having any real strength. The smell faded after that and was more of a background attraction that no one really sees. Not that it made the scent terrible, more like it made it bearable for someone like me. By that I mean not a lover of lavender!!

Consistency

Soft and smooth, whipped to a perfect texture that makes me think of Philadelphia cream cheese. I didn’t try to put it on a cracker but if you didn’t know what it was you might be tempted to. You could hear the little bubbles of air popping as yo scoop some of the butter out and boy was it creamy.

It literally melted into the palm of my hand without much coaxing and transformed into a light oil that was easy to rub into my beard. It soaked in really well leaving no hair untouched! Don’t think for a second that because it’s so light and airy that you’re not getting a full jars worth. This is filled to the brim.

Benefits

John has opted for a different carrier blend than the one he uses for his oils and balms. Make no mistake, he has used the best ingredients that money can buy to produce a butter worthy of the Big Phat Beard name. Only having 3 carriers means that you can get more out of each individual oil, increasing the benefits that they give your beard and skin.

Shea Butter is the preferred choice for Lunar Solace as it is for the majority of butters on the market. A lot of brands like to add another butter but John likes to keep things simple. Maximum product for maximum effect.

My beard felt very soft after the week which is to be expected but not only did the overall feel of my beard change but my skin felt more hydrated. On a daily basis the butter was keeping everything under control, moisturised and nourished for a good 10/11 hours. That is a fantastic length of time to have before any dryness sets in and the itch begins!

Here are the carriers used in Lunar Solace.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can protect your hair from damage by reducing protein loss. Its main benefits are for the skin. It has a natural SPF of around 7 which can help protect against UV rays. Obviously it wouldn’t be enough on its own but it’s a start. Coconut oil is also effective in treating eczema and other skin conditions as well.

Hemp Seed

This oil helps to moderate oil production by moisturising your skin without clogging the pores. It can help to reduce acne and is used as an anti-inflammatory.

Apricot Oil

Apricot oil is great for your skin, helping to reduce inflammation and moisturising your skin underneath the beard. It also helps to protect the skin from UV rays which is great for those that love the sun!. The oil cleanses your skin and pores leaving them feeling rejuvenated. Apricot oil also benefits your hair by moisturising and stimulating the production of sebum. This helps to lower the amount of beardruff and keeps the hairs healthy.

Originality

I will once again direct you to my previous reviews of Big Phat Beard for you to get my thoughts on the originality of the brand. One thing I will say is that John has made his branding slick, professional and easy to recognise.

Labelling

I mentioned on a previous review that the labelling wasn’t 100% correct. Well, that has been fixed with the butter! The batch number, allergens, address (only the postcode but that is enough), instructions the INCI and so on. He has nailed it on this and I know that his oils and balms will be equally spot on going forward.

All the information and the full address can be found on the website so there is no stone left unturned. No hiding behind fake addresses or refusing to comply with laws here. John is a big believer in giving full transparency to his customers, and rightly so.

Conclusion

Big Phat Beard have done it again. A fantastic product that works really well. I love how soft and smooth the butter is and how quickly it dissolves into my beard and the skin below. It helps reduce dryness and moisturises every follicle.

I’m not a big fan of the scent as I despise Lavender but I do understand why it is used. I didn’t use it at night as I wanted to be awake to get a full understanding of the product and what it does. However, I can see why this is marketed as a night time butter.

There is no wax in Lunar Solace which is why it dissolves so quickly and doesn’t offer any hold to your beard. But, why would you want that when you’re asleep?!!

Is this the best butter on the market? You will have to wait until I have reviewed all of the butters I have before finding out which one is my top butter! If you want to buy this or any other product then click the banner below to visit the website.
