Beards are cool right? That must make Yeards even cooler!! That’s right, It’s a Yeard Thing – 3 weeks in!

The tache had to go!

I went back on my original plan to keep the tache and grow everything around it! Sometimes, we have to make sacrifices for the greater good. This was a sacrifice I had to make for various reasons and in the end, the decision was the right one! Still, as I’m growing out my yeard, the tache will come back and I’m sure it will be glorious.

I’m currently just over 3 weeks in and things are going well. I’ve got a decent covering of the face but it’s not yet time to give it some shape. I’ll be doing this myself in the next couple of months. I’m going to use this opportunity to delve into the full experience of growing a beard but I’m going to wait for at least 2 months, maybe 3 before going for the trim!


What’s the full experience?

In my humble opinion (although apparently opinions are evil), the full experience is doing everything yourself. That includes shaping it, trimming where necessary and being in total control of the whole process. I don’t have the steadiest hands and have always used a barber to do my shaping and trimming.

This might change as time goes on and the beard starts to take on a life of its own. The fear of making a mistake might overpower the need for control. Only time will tell if I have the courage to do what’s necessary.


Using products

I have been using products since around the second day. That’s when the stubble started to really come in and the dreaded itch began! Beard oil is the best thing for your skin at this stage and about 2 drops from a pipette was all I needed. I massaged it into my skin and across the 5 o’clock shadow.

Now that I’m 3 weeks in, the whiskers have sprouted and the oil is working it’s way on to the hair. I am currently only using one beard oil as it is under review. That’s right, I am doing a review on a beard product. Growing a beard is the perfect time to dive in and use different products with the aim of reviewing them.

I am going for 2 reviews a month which gives me enough time to use a product for 2 weeks and really put it through its paces. That would equal 24 products if all goes to plan! This might change as time goes on and if money isn’t available to purchase the goods!


The right diet

Okay, I’m going to be honest here. I haven’t started the year with the right mindset when it comes to my diet. I had planned to eat healthy, drink less alcohol and exercise more. You know, to give my beard the best start in life.

Instead, I have finished my beers (there were a few left!!) and eaten shit food since the turn of the year. Mince pies aren’t going to finish themselves right! I know that isn’t the right attitude but in my defence there was also chocolate. Yes, that isn’t a good excuse, I understand that. But, chocolate……………mmmmmmm

The thing is, all the shit is now out of the house, apart from a couple of chocolate bars. And I will eat them as part of a more balanced diet. I can’t promise that I won’t drink a beer or eat shite food at some point but I will be eating a lot healthier from this day forth. Pinky promise!!


What does healthy eating have to do with your beard?

I’m glad you asked. Well, I’m glad I asked myself that question on your behalf!

The thing is, having a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly can be a benefit when growing a beard. Exercise can help produce testosterone, especially weight lifting, and this is part of being a man. Men have testosterone and that makes manly things happen. Manly things like growing a beard!

Keeping hydrated is good for your skin and that is good for growing a beard. If your skin is greasy due to eating too many sweets and drinking too much beer, fizzy drinks etc then your pores can clog up. This will potentially cause ingrown hairs which can be painful and is definitely annoying. It can also make your facial fuzz weaker. That’s why water is the best drink for growing a beard.

I did go for a run earlier this week and I will be doing as much exercise as possible. I won’t be joining a gym (have you seen the prices?!!) but doing some cardio and strengthening exercises like push-ups is a good start. I’ll keep you updated on my fitness goals if and when I start them!


What is the length goal?

I kind of want the length to be where it is in the picture below on the right. That was taken on the 12th April 2021 and I started growing this beard near the end of March. The picture on the left was taken on the 25th April 2020 when I was already about 5 weeks in.

It means I have less time to reach that length but I am armed with more knowledge that I was back then. I know more about how to grow a beard, what products to use, how often to wash my beard, when to trim my beard and so on. Let’s see what happens!
