So, you’re growing a beard. You’ve taken the first steps into changing your life, and your face! Have you had a look at all the beard products out there? Wait…… You wash your beard with what?
Do Not Use Shampoo!
Stop what you are doing. Put the Tresemme down and never touch it again! Well, at least not for your beard. You see, even though it appears to have cleaned your beard, it’s actually destroying it.
The reason is down to ingredients. Shampoo uses loads of chemicals to strip away the natural oils your hair produces. This gets rid of the grease leaving your hair looking silky and smooth! (If you have any hair that is!!)
Why does hair become greasy?
Sebum Oil
Each hair follicle contains sebaceous glands which produce sebum oil. This helps to naturally lubricate your hair and that’s
what gives it the greasy look. However, your beard needs sebum oil to keep it moisturized.
If you don’t use the right product when washing your beard then it will become dry and potentially cause split ends and breakage. This will make your beard look and feel like a steel wool pad. No one wants that look!!
Beard wash effectively cleans your beard without stripping those natural oils away. This makes it feel softer and more nourished. It also helps with your skin.
The skin on your scalp is harder than the skin on your face. Using regular shampoo on your face will leave your skin dry and itchy. You don’t get that with proper Beard wash.

Yep and it makes sense. If you are growing a beard then you want to look after it properly. Don’t stop there though! Just using beard wash is not going to be enough to keep your beard looking its best.
You also need to use beard oil. I know, growing and maintaining a beard is not easy but the end product will be worth it. The oil helps to keep moisture in your beard and give that shiny look.
What’s the best beard wash?
Ultimately this will come down to personal choice. Don’t go for that cheap £1 beard wash as you might as well use shampoo! Go for something that is good value but high quality. Brands like Beard manners, Big Phat Beard and The Urban Gent all have fantastic beard washes. You can check them and loads more brands out on the UK Beard Portal.
